Statement
The motivation behind my practice is the gaps created between our desires and 'reality' and our fundamental need to fulfill potential. Whether that is sexual urges or a quest for knowledge.
All the work touches on feelings of futility, repetition and of reparation - often using inappropriate materials and methods of making. The materials chosen often already have a history, this is exploited to push feelings of the weight of the past. The fresh form the materials take on, expose a new potential and the tug of the future.
It is the subtle misunderstandings and loss of information that have been a starting point for this work.
In recent work, I have ripped out, shredded and hole punched the pages of a book called ‘Learning, Memory and Conceptual Processes’ by Walter Kintsch. The aim of this work was to capture intangible thought processes and re-present them as physical objects - such as attempting to read, understanding information and Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome.
In the final sculptures the whole book is included and all the information present. I like the idea that if one stares long enough something from the subject of the original text might percolate through the dissection
All the work has very feminine poetics, juxtaposes minimal and complexity and includes a hint of eroticism in every piece...
Basically - I intervene, mess around, alter, cut up, sculpt, install and play with ordinary things - I'm looking for the glitches, gaps and holes in everyday life.
